Product Care
First and foremost, it is much simpler than you think to care of metal and wood in general. It is also easy to mistreat metal and wood items. It does depend a lot on what it will be used for, kitchen utensil, toilet paper roll holder, a hook hanging outdoors in the elements and so on. But I want to keep it simple and straight forward.
METAL
Caring for my metal products is pretty much all the same, the only difference might be is when to reapply a finish due to how frequent the product is used or what environment it is placed in.
Some products I would recommend:
- Boiled Linseed Oil (dries in 1-3 days)
- Raw Linseed Oil (offers same protection as boiled but has longer drying time)
- Paste Wax (can be re-applied and be fully dry in under 30 minutes)
- Beeswax or a Beeswax-Linseed Oil Blend
- Spray Lacquer (best non traditional way to seal and protect metal)
WOOD
Caring for the wooden utensils and wooden products of mine is pretty easy but there are some other precautions to take in order to properly care for them.
Some products I would recommend:
- Mineral Oil
- Olive Oil
- Beeswax or Beeswax Mixed with Mineral Oil
Key priority in maintaining wood items, especially wooden utensils is protecting them from moisture. Never let wood utensils soak in a soapy kitchen sink or put them in the dishwasher, this will cause cracking and drastically shorten it's life as well as it's beauty. When you are done using it simply rinse with soapy hot water and dry off right away, this is the best way to extend the life of the utensil. I recommend reapplying a food safe finish 1 or 2 times a month or more if in extensive use. I do the same thing with my own items as I do for the products I sell. I let the utensil soak in mineral oil for 30 minutes, then dry it off and apply a beeswax mineral oil blend wax over it. This really keeps the wood looking new and rich with color.
